The Hypotheticus Chronicles

Banded Atlas

It is much the same size as the Goliath Jelbag. Its glowing stripes have become organised around its head to maximize the spread of the dazzling glow, which confuses other animals, and attracts the attention of Banded Atlases of the opposite gender. Banded Atlases are rare, but their light can be seen from such a distance that they manage to get together enough to sustain the population. When they come into contact with Banded Atlases of the opposite gender they caress each other with their tentacles in a sort of ritual and eventually the male transfers its genetic material via one of its tentacles. There is a subtle difference in the wavelengths of male and females that they are adept at detecting, and they will avidly avoid members of the same sex.

Since Banded Atlas only need to feed once every 60 days or so, they spend the rest of their time resting in any cave, tunnel or hole they can find that will fit their large size. When they finally get hungry, they will set off on a moonlit night when their reflector strips will shine at maximum strength. It on these hunting trips that mates will be found, and when a mate is detected, all premise of hunting will be forgotten. Once the mating is over they will resume hunting. A pregnant female will also give off a different wavelength of light so that other males won't waste time searching them out. The new wavelength becomes apparent as soon as mating is over. Once the pregnant female finds two meals (an extra one to feed the babies inside it) and eats them, it will return to its old nest or find a new one. While waiting the 50-60 it will digest its food and its babies will grow. It will give birth after the period of about sixty days to a large litter of Banded Atlases. The babies will also give off a different wavelength of light that adults will avoid. Since the babies are fairly small, have to fend for themselves from the day they are born, and give off light like a beacon, many of them will be predated and die before reaching adult-hood. Unlike adults babies will need to be on the move in search for food 50% of the time.
