The Hypotheticus Chronicles

Boldscale Tapir Fish

The scales at the sides of the Tapir Fish's snout have developed into large, curved, pointed and hard features, somewhat resembling tusks. It uses its "tusks" to uproot plants and scrape moss and lichen off of rocks.
The bold patterns on the scales of its back seem to help hide it among seaweed of the same pattern; it could also be an alternative approach towards countercoloration, or make it appear bigger and thus less likely to be attacked by predators. It may even be used to indicate the health of the fish, as it might be that only a healthy Boldscale Tapir Fish can develop properly bold markings.

The Boldscale Tapir Fish, like the Tapir Fish, is a calm and nonviolent herbivore. Even the displays it may make featuring its "tusks" are merely bluffs.
